Take a Break! Promote Good Mental Health at Work and at Home

There’s a lot more to a cup of coffee than just the coffee. Coffee brings friends, co-workers and groups together to connect and catch up. These check-ins can also help combat and address the rising tide of mental health issues in the workplace too.

A chat over a coffee with a trusted co-worker can help us talk through a tough situation or ongoing issue at work or at home. With half a million Canadians missing work every week because of a mental health issue, we need more co-workers and workplaces doing more to support their people’s mental health.

Creating a culture where co-workers feel comfortable going for coffee to talk about how they are doing is one example of what an organization can do. Along with more training, access to services and public leadership, employers can make their workplace mental-health friendly. MindsMatter is a free, confidential and easy-to-use online assessment for employers to gauge where they stand on workplace mental health and what more they can do.
